Week 4 - Welcome

Hello and welcome to week 4 of the Guerrilla Season Book Blog Project. This week you should be finishing up the novel, pages 242 through 326. Also, don't forget to read the Author's Note at the end of the novel.

This week we will have some more discussion questions, a podcast from Pat about the future of Guerrilla Season and some more examples of student projects from the book. The students at South Valley Jr High are turning in at least one of the five options from the Final Project List - see blog post from Week #3 on the final projects. These final projects are due on midnight of Friday, April 4th and we will be showing many of them on the blog.

Go ahead and post a comment, leave a question or just hang out and check out what others are saying about Guerrilla Season. As always if you don't want to leave a discussion question on the blog please drop us an e-mail at speakingofhistory@gmail.com

I've been wondering why the federals decided to burn their farm and take all their supplies.I was really confused about this because he was federal.

I think both sides used the bible as justification. The south used it by saying that we are the superior beings and the north used it as justification by saying that we are all created equal and should be treated as such.

I think that the use of the Bible in the book was a good idea. The Bible was what most families read at night during this time period.
I think that both sides did use the Bible as justificiation for their actions during the war.

Jethro -

I found your question posted here (in the wrong spot) so I hope you find my response!

I know it's confusing to figure out who was doing what to whom in Missouri, and why! One reviewer of "GS" said something like "it can be confusing, but that's part of the story"! And it most definitely is a big part of what I was trying to convey. A good part of the time, people never knew why they were being targeted - often weren't even sure who was targeting them.

In the case you're asking about, first off, Matt & his family aren't really "Federal," though his mom of course tries to persuade the Federal captain that she is. Matt's family have tried to remain neutral.

But the reason they burn Matt's barn is because they suspect he has been helping Jesse, who is a known "Secesh" or Southerner.
