Week 4 - The Bible in Guerrilla Season

The Bible is mentioned many times throughout the novel - both in Jesse's family and Matt's.

What did you think about the use of the Bible in Guerrilla Season?

Was it too much? Was it typical for the time period?

Did both sides use the Bible as justificiation for their actions?

I feel like the use of the bible is not that good. I felt like Ma was trying to use it if the kids were bad.

I really liked the use of the Bible in the book. Evev though Ma used it when the kids were bad, Jesse also used it to help Matt. I thought it was a good way to incorporate it in the book.

I think the use of the bible in the book was Okay. I don't know if its a clever idea to have the bible in the story because there are other religions that could or not be defensed. For the time period it was typical.

i think the Bible was good because it showed how much they really cared about their papa becasue it was his. it did feel, though, like it was used for ma to show that the kids were bad.

I beliieve that the use of the bible in Guerrilla Season was justified- it was a different society back then and religon was a huge part of everyday life for families in the 1860's. Many people also read with the bible, because it was their only reading material. So it was an important book for many families for religon and for just reading.

I feel the use of the bible was much needed. During that time period religion was a VERY big deal. Both sides, north and south, felt the bible was relating to them.

I feel that the Bible was used for good. I think this because Ma was trying to help her children open their eyes. I think it also made some inpact on the children.

i think that you should use the bible when you are like upset or angry with yourself and or other people. also you could use it when you are bored and dont have anything to read.

I also agree with the way that you said that it was just a way to tell the kids that they were doing something wrong and that they needed to follow the bible. I think this is wrong and that today we use the bible for church.

I think in this time period it was typical to see people with bibles because there were more religious people.

I think that the use of the Bible in this book was understandable. When you think about it, all through history (like in the Crusades) people have been using religion as...well almost an excuse I guess, to fight each other. I think that the people in this time period would twist around the meaning of Bible passages to make themselves feel better about doing something that they know the Bible says not to do, like killing people.

I loved the use of the Bible. It showed how important it was to follow God's Word through those hard times.

I think they used the bible to show how religous people were back then, because people really wanted to live a good life and go to heaven.

I don't think that the use of the bible was that good. I think that Ma was trying to use it if the kids were bad. Ma should have used it just because not as a punishment.

I think the use of the Bible in Gurrilla Season was not only apropriate, but necessary. Religion contributed to the conflict that took place in Missiori and Kansas. This is demonstrated by how Matt's ma interprates the Bible differtently from Jesse. Also, it shows how religion in general, and the Bible in specific should be something you turn to in times of crisis.

I think that the use of the Bible was very important in the book, even if they just use it at a way of punishment, it was very relivent to that time period.

I believe that the use of the Bible in Guerrilla Season was not used to much for the book. At this time it was very typical for the time period to have a strong sense of religion.

The use of the bible in Guerrilla Season was just a way for people to be able to, in a sense, "escape" from what they were surrounded by. As many bad things were happening in this time period, the use of the bible was not heavy at all, but it was also normal for this time period. Also, many people could have used the bible to justify themselves or other people. For example; Ma gave Matt the bible many times because he was getting into a lot of trouble and he needed to clear his head. Afterwords, Matt was able to clear his mind of the bad things he had committed, and was also able to have a new outlook on his life.
