Week #3 - Pat Asks You A Question and Shares Her Experience on the Gulf Coast From Last Week

I’m back from my trip to the Gulf Coast, where my family and I spent five nights at the Pearlington Recovery Center while doing Katrina Recovery work in Pearlington, Mississippi. It was an unforgettable experience for all of us, on so many levels that it’s just impossible to get into here.
But for the blog’s purposes, it made me think a lot about what it means to have your home and all its contents gone in a heartbeat.

I couldn’t help but compare Hurricane Katrina with the Missouri-Kansas situation during the war, where both individual farms like Mr. Stone’s and entire communities like Lawrence, Kansas, and Osceola, Missouri – to name just two -– were destroyed by people on both sides of the conflict. And then there was the infamous Order #11, when the Union cleared out everybody in four Missouri border counties and burned all their homes and farms, leaving a desolate landscape that must have seemed eerily similar to some of the wiped-out communities I saw on the Gulf Coast.

So this week I have two questions:

#1 - If you were faced with losing your home to destruction and could save only one thing (other than your and your family’s lives!), what would it be?

#2 - And if you have ever been so unfortunate as to have this happen in your own life – lose your home to a flood, a fire, a tornado – what was that like for you?

If I were to ever lose my home to some kind of destruction, the first thing I would grab to save is my iPod. I know that sounds kind of strange, but I can't survive without music. I can't stand silence and constantly have headphones in.

If I had to leave my home and could only save one thing I would save my laptop. That way, I could listen to all my music, because I would go crazy without music and it helps me get through tough times. Also, I could email my friends to keep in touch and make new friends online, so I wouldn't ever be lonely. I could watch TV shows and movies online, even if I lost my TV at home. I could write about my experiences to vent my feelings. And finally, I could just surf the web, so I would never get bored as long as I had my laptop.

When I was four years old, and living in Kansas at the time, there was a huge tornado near mine and my grandparent's house. It was the scariest thing ever. We had to go down into the basement and stay there for a few hours until the tornado was over. I was very young and I didn't quite know what was happening, so all I did was cry during the whole tornado. This tornado was probably one of the most dreadful experiences of my life.

Thanks to everybody for these great answers to my question.

Some observations about the answers:

*Interesting how many people said they would save their iPods. Just as interesting, though, was the reason that at least some of you gave: Your music is so important to you, helps you relax & calm down, and you instinctively realize that if you lost everything, having your music would help you to cope.

* Very poignant how many people spoke of saving a memento of a loved one. That really impressed me and hit me right in the heart.
Thanks for sharing those emotions.

* I couldn't help but notice how many people said they would save a pet (and one of you has a dog named Shelby - just like me!). And I couldn't help but make the comparison, again, to the people who were in Hurricane Katrina. Again and again, you hear stories revolving around people who refused to leave their pets - or those who did and are still haunted by it.
How attached we become to the animals we take into our homes!

* I was hoping nobody would ask me what I would save ... but somebody did. So ... yes, first I would save my labradoodle, Shelby. But if (as someone suggested) we're counting pets as members of the family, I would have to say I'd save my videos of my children when they were little. Those are precious memories that could never be replaced.

If I could only save one thing from my house before I lost it, and pets counted as family, I would take every scrapbook and picture that I could find because everything else could be replaced, my ipod and cell phone and other materialistic items, but the scrapbooks that took so much time and love to make and the pictures and maybe the only memories of certain family members or friends, those are things that no matter how hard you try there is just no replacing them as they were before.

I have never lost my home to a natural disaster but, I was out shopping with my grandmother when she received the call that her house had burned down. It was in the middle of summer vacation and that was the only year since I was born that there was no Camp Cousins because of it.

I also was on my way home when I heard on the radio that one of the fires during a huge fire storm was less than five miles from my best friend's house. I started crying and made my parents turn the car around and drive to their house and I didn't stop crying until we got to her house and I saw that she was ok. At that point, the fire was about a mile away and everything that they were going to take had been packed up and their neighbors had been evacuated. We took some of the boxes with us and said good-bye and that goodness that they were safe, as was their house. I'm so grateful that nothing like that has happened to me but I know that my friends and family would be there for me if something like that did.

If I could save one thing in my house from a fire it would probably be my iTouch. I can't live without music and it also has internet access, so it'd be like saving my computer too.

If I lost my home and everything else, I'd be horrified. I couldn't imagine not having a home or any clothes except for the clothes on my back or in that matter, nothing at all. I would be very upset for sure.

If I were faced with losing my home the only other thing I would save besides my family would have to be the pictures of my dearly beloved grandma Sandi. She died about a year ago two weeks before my birthday. It was quite a tragedy because she meaned so much to me. I lived with her for two years and she was always there for me and i could go to her with any problems so I keep pictures of her around my house. Fortunatly I have never been faced with a tragedy such as losing my home. But if I did I'm sure i would be very upset and depressed.

If I was faced with losing my home to destruction and could save only one thing I would save my cell phone because I can connect anyone on it. I would be a very easy way to call for help and there are so much activities to do on it like games and texting friends. It would be small and light so I could take it anywhere.

The book was great and i can see where you are going about how hard it must have been during those times as it is now with all the natural disasters and everything.

Your question number one was quiete interesting and i shall respond.

If i was to be faced with a natural disaster i would save..... My fathers dog tags he and my mother got a divorce and i dont get to see him often because he was and is currently serving in iraq and if something was to happen to him that is all i would have of him.

#1 If I were faced with losing my home I think that I would most likely take my pictures of my family and or my pets!! Pictures are irreplaceable and when you lose pictures it’s like losing a thousand words. I would take my pets because your pets have feelings too!!!! IF I left them behind the years of my life spent playing with them would be lost

#2 A few months ago when the fires were raging in Southern California I was awaken by my parents and I was told that we needed to evacuate our house. As I looked out the window to my parent’s room the fires were about 1/4 of a mile from my house. We began to scurry around gathering what we could. As soon as we were about ready to leave our house the police came by announcing that we had to evacuate. My stomach was turning so fast that I felt like I was going to be sick. As we drove away from our house all I could think of was what I had left behind. We continued to drive and all we saw was the mountains around us on fire. This situation was probably one of the most difficult times. I had to sleep in my mom’s office and all I could think about was if our house had burnt down. In the morning we were let back up to our house and everything was ok with our house but I hope to never go through that again.

If I were ever forced to leave my house, my first choice would be my dog but I would consider him part of the family. So my next choice would be my cell phone because we might need to call for help. Also, I pretty much live on my phone and all my friends' numbers are in it. Without it I wouldn't know what to do.

I would save my blue-slate ibanez electric guitar. When I was 7, my house caught on fire, and my family barely got out in time. My house was destroyed, and my little sister had to be rescusitated.

If I could only save one thing I would probably save my computer. It has all my pictures, music, and videos. It also has my iTunes library so if my iPod got destroyed I could go buy a new one and I would still have all my music.
If not my computer I would probably save my Hawk Nelson and Stellar Kart autographs.

When the Southern California San Diego "fire storm" 2007 hit, my family almost lost our home. Our whole town was evacuated it was the scariest thing I have ever gone through. We live about 20 minutes from the beach and it took us two hours to get there the traffic was so bad. Once we got there we went from hotel to hotel and every one was full. We almost had to stay in a shelter. My grandma owns a house at the beach that she rents out so we decided to check if there was room and at the time my aunt was staying there so she let us in. The first night we stayed there my brother and I woke up and it was pitch black I thought it must be one in the morning but I couldn't go back to sleep so I checked the clock and it was seven in the morning the smoke was so bad we didnt go outside for two days. After a week we got to go back home and thankfully everything was alright.

I haven't had something unfortunate like that happen to me. I've been very blessed and I realize that. If I could only save one thing, I would save my binder that has all of my writings and pictures in it.

I lost my house December 20th,2005 to a pool heater fire. It was really hard for everyone in my family to get back on our feet. We ended up having to live in a "villa" for 6 monthes while our house was being rebuilt. It was a very shocking event because everytime i tell the story its a perfect picture in my head...

If i were to lose my house to destruction i would save something that would be wortth a lot of money so my family could buy a new home. And for us to regain the money and things we once had. i would save a very valuable neclace that my grandma ann gave to me. it wouldn't pay off our house. But it would definatlely help until my parents made enough money to have our finacial life as it once was.

If I could save anything if my house was lost in a natural distaster i would save my picture of me and my gma. She died of canser but about 3 weeks before she died we went down there and stayed with her while i had a softball tournoment. I was in my uniform and she was smileing the best smile she ever could because we knew that these might be the last pics together. I love her and looking at those remind me how strong and brave she and my family can be.

If I had something bad happen to my house and I could only take one thing with me it would be a family picture. I say this because my family means the world to me and if I were to loose one of them I would at least have a picture of them when they were happy and at a good time in their life. If this kind of destruction happened to me I don't know how I would handle it because I personaly and not had to go through something like that. I know for sure I would need my best friend to be there when it happens beacuse she is always there for me and helps me through everything.
