Week #3 - Pat Asks You - The Civil War and the War in Iraq

The style of warfare used in Missouri to fight much of the Civil War is described as "guerrilla warfare" - a method of combat by which a smaller group of combatants attempts to use its mobility to defeat a larger, and consequently less mobile, army (source: wikipedia)

If you have been following the war in Iraq this term is often used to describe the warfare which currently takes place on the streets of that country every day.

What similarities do you see with the guerrilla warfare tactics used in Missouri in 1863 and Iraq in 2008?

I think that it is the same because they are still fighting on the streets in 2008 as they were in 1863 war in my opinion the meaning of war has never changed but what we fight for has.

There are dissagreements between both sides, and we are trying to win by killing each other. There are other similarities such as how Iraq is making kids fight in the war.

I don't know much about warfare tactics but I think the War in Iraq and Missouri in 1863 are very similar. In both there are two groups of people that have very different ideas fighting with each other. They attack each other in very mean ways and it is hard to tell which side people are on. Just like in Missouri Iraq is a very tough place to live in right now because of the war.

The reasons for which we wage wars is different in every war, but the point is the same to kill people to get what you want.

While weapons have changed over the past one hundered-fifty years, the effects of war are the same. Deadly, and heart wrenching. Even for those who are not actully fighting in the war, the family of those serving still have to go through the same worries and fears that those had to all those years ago. Also the soliders have the same basis of their reasons for fighting, a difference of views. I feel the the Civil War and Iraq, while not completly similar, they both have the same general reasonings.

The War in Missouri of 1863 and the War we face today in Iraq are very similar in many ways. They are similar because both sides obviously disagreed and are willing to risk lives to get what they want.

One main similarity I have noticed between the War in Iraq and the Civil War is the way in which death is brought upon the people. During the Civil War sometime a whole town's worth of males were killed at one time. This is not far from the suicide- bombers of terrorism today. The only difference between the two is the in modern times, murder is not limited to gender, age, or even your beliefs.

Guerrillas in 1863 used this tactic to kill soldiers by disguise. The Iraqians use this tactic for suicide bombing, which kills 5 to 10 Americans and over
15 Iraqians in the process.

The resons for the United States going to war is completely different now than they were in the 186o's. However, many terrorists are using the same type of methods to fighting as the guerrillas in 1863. True the warfare isn't quite the same it used to be quick ambushes that suprised the enemy, with gunfire. Now the terrorists are using explosives to fight the united states. One thing is for sure guerrilla warfare is somewhat effective, but it cannot win a war.

In the book, my favorite character is obviously Matt. He has so much potential in his life. And it really inspires me with how independent and capable he is. My least favorite character is Buck. He just seems so sure of himself and appears have a big ego. The way he treats others just seems odd. -Mizzou08

I really don't know a lot about war tactics, but it seems to me that violence seems to be the first way people think of to solve a big problem. I think it shows a lot about the world we live in that in 1863 people were killing each other because they couldn't get along, and now in 2008, in an age of technology that is allowing me to talk to people from all over, people are still killing each other because they don't think the same way. But now, we have bigger guns that kill more people faster.

I think that the war is the same between 1863 and 2008 because alot of the same things are happening. Such as the guerrillas are going around and killing people in certain towns. Like in Iraq people are killing others by putting dangerous objects in public places.

Some of the similar guerrilla warfare tactics from Missouri to the present day war in Iraq are inhumanities of how people are killed. Just like in Missouri in 1863, innocent people are killed every day in the war in Iraq because a shot is fired if there is even a suspicion that the target might be the enemy. Another similarity is that the war in Iraq is fought by small groups of soldiers attacking just like in Missouri.

The similarities i see between the two wars are, that they are both fighting for freedom, and they were fighting on the streets just like in Iraq.

I really don't know much of tactics, but I do know that the Guerrillas and the Iraqui soldiers both use young teens and moder war-fare guns. They also fight on the streets like in Guerrilla Season.

In the book Guerrilla Season my favorite character would have to be Matt. He has a lot of responsiblity without his dad there and he makes sure that things get done. On the other hand my least favorite character would be the people who are burning down people's homes and killing one another.

The wars are similar, but still different. First off they're both taking a long time. Lot's of civilians are dying and the USA is losing millions of $. They both use guerrilla warfare, execpt it's only one side using it. In the civil war and Iraq, people dressed up lake the other side. And, like in the civil war, WE are letting prisoners go but THEY aren't. I think the US could learn some guerrila tactics, that way civilian casualties could be minimized and we could win.

I think that the reasons America had for starting each of the wars are completely different, but the tactics are basically the same. Also, the indiscriminate killing of civilians in the Civil War and the killing of civilians in the Iraq War are the same, and both are abhorrent. The wars are so similar, it's almost creepy.

The Guerrilla warfare tactics used in Missouri in 1863 and in the Iraq war today are very the same. The "bushwackers" are todays iraq terrorists and we are the other side but it is working a little differently because we are somewat overcoming it.

I dont know a lot about the war in Iraq. But I'd imagine that even though the reasons to fight are good (like in the US civil war) they use some bad and even creul methods of getting what they want. war is pointless and stupid to me anyway. I don't see how killing people will eventually get you want.

Some similarties I see with the guerrilla warefare and the tactics used in Iraq are some of the same but modified. Like the roadside boms that kill people when they drive bye. Those are almost like the guerrillas hiding in the bushes but instead of hiding they walk away and leave a bom for somone to step on or drive over.

My favorite character in Guerilla Season is Clay. Clay gives Matt good advice and can help him out even though he's a cripple. Clay doesn't let his disablilities get in the way of his dreams. My least favorite character is Jesse. Jesse lies to Matt often and ends up getting him in trouble a lot. Jesse is selfish, he expects everyone to solve his problems for him.

Guerilla warfare has always been the same. The scenarios are just different. in Iraq the sunis and shiites are are using the whole "blend in set off explosives when people least expect it tactic" becuase of their situation. They're facing the worlds most advanced millitary so they can't just use their a-k's to mow people down. they have to use some strategy and big explosives do to our heavy armor/artillery.

Some similarities between the war in Iraq and the war in 1863 are that they both have injured or killed innocent people and are continuing to.

I think theyre arent as many simularities in the war then and the war now because, u dont have to be forced to fight. But there are a lot of young people fighting now and losing there lives.

In Iraq, there hasn't been battle lines and fight to the death. Only smaller assaults on groups of people. In 1863, guerrilla warfare was used also.

the things that i see that wherethe same in 1863 and 2008 is that people are still dieig and putting there life on the line for us.

The War in Missouri in 1863 has a lot of similarities to the War in Iraq today. Including the fact that both sides disagreed, they both were fighting because neither would admit that the other was right. I believe that people fight for the same reasons that they did back then. But in our case in the war today the problems we are fighting over are defiantly more severe.

Anonymous said...

they are similar in the way that people are like still dying and such, but in the Civil War, the would jump out and shoot people, but in Iraq they jump out and blow stuff up.

They both use guerilla warfare. Guerilla warfare is when you fight by hiding

My opinion i believe there are very much similar. I think that because both battles are against eachother and are willing to risk there own lives just to kill someone elses and win.
