I son't think any of my ancestors participated in the Civil War, but one of my ancestors did fight in the War of 1812: Andrew Jackson.

Andrew Jackson & the War of 1812 are mentioned a couple of times in "Guerrilla Season." See if you can find both references and understand why Jackson was such an important figure to Civil War era Southerners.

I have no knowledge of any of any my ancestors beyond my grandparents. All I know is that my dad and his dad were involved in the army, but I don't the wars.

I did not have anyone in my family fight in the Civil War. But one of my ancestors, Mark Sewell, fought in the Alamo.

Actually, the reason that my family isn't still living in Europe is because of the Civil War. As the story goes, one of my great-something grandfathers was, living in Germany when the Civil War broke out. His Army battalion, I believe it called (I'm not too familiar with war terms) was paid by a wealthy Northern abolitionist to fight for the Union. After the war was over, he decided to stay in America, and started a small farm in Kansas. He then later marred and had several children. So that is my family's Civil War story.

I am not completely sure if my ancesstors served in the Civil War. I do know that all of my family comes from Kansas and Missouri. I also know that most og my family were Jayhawkers.

I don't think that any of my family has served in the Civil War. The only family I have that live in the southern part of the U.S live in Tennessee, Florida, and Philadelphia.

My Great Great Great Grandpa John (not sure how many greats) served on the confederate side of the war. He was from one of the Carolinas.

I have talked to my entire family, and none of them have,or can recall anyone that has served in the civil war, but my grandfather did serve in the vietnam war , and was shot in the shoulder. He still lives to this day, with a purple heart.

Interesting responses - especially relevant is Faye Lee's. It was not uncommon for Northern abolitionists to pay settlers to come into Kansas to try to sway the free-state vote, a number of years before the Civil War. That was one of the causes of the "Border War" - Missourians were angry that the abolitionists were "buying" the vote, rather than allowing it to be fairly decided by true Kansas settlers. So I wonder if Faye Lee's ancestor was one of those rather than actually being paid to come in and fight for the Union? Especially since he was in Kansas?

Yes, my great great grandfather was in the calvary during the Civil War.

I know I had family in the civil war. I am pretty sure there were two on the confederate side and one on the union side.

My great grandmother's father,James Carrithers, served in the Indiana Regiment of the Civil War along with his two brothers.His brother Andrew served from 1862 till the end of the war and his other brother Samuel served from 1862 till 1864 when he was severly injured in Resaca GA. James served only a few months until he was injured when he was shot with a bullet that entered through his eye and came out of his ear.For the remainder of his life he took pictures from a side view but lived 53 more years with one eye and one ear.

The reason I asked this question was to get you thinking about the roles your ancestors may have played in this aspect of our country's history. Most of us know what part our fathers and grandfathers had in more recent wars such as Vietnam, Korea, World War II and, obviously, the current war in Iraq. But how many remember the great sacrifices our forebears made going back 100, even 200 years? I think we all have a tendency to forget that these people we see in old photos, or as a name with dates attached on a genealogical record, were living, breathing human beings. As you read on in "Guerrilla Season," try to keep in mind that it could have been your own ancestors in this situation - if not in Missouri, then somewhere else in the country or the world. And your own existence may be owed to the fact that somehow, those ancestors made it through a difficult situation!

Most of my ancestors on my mothers' side were in the civil war. They were from Missouri,I think most of them were on the Confederate side of the war.

My Grandfather on my mom's side was in the Civil War. I don't know entirely what his role was in the Civil War, but he did do some fighting, not a ton of it, but a little of it.
